Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’ selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025

Kiran Rao’s much-anticipated film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been officially chosen as India’s entry for the 2025 Academy Awards.

The Film Federation of India (FFI) made the announcement at an event in Chennai on Monday, confirming that the film will compete in the prestigious Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

Selected from a competitive pool of 29 films, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ emerged as the unanimous choice of the 13-member selection committee, chaired by acclaimed Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua. Among the other prominent contenders were the Bollywood blockbuster Animal, Malayalam National Award-winning film Aattam, and Cannes-winning title All We Imagine As Light.

Produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ marks Rao’s return to the director’s chair and has garnered critical acclaim for its unique narrative and cinematic craftsmanship. The selection places the film in the spotlight on an international stage, amplifying its potential to resonate with a global audience.
