Director S Shankar has raised concerns over potential copyright issues involving the upcoming release ‘Devara’. In a cryptic post, Shankar expressed his discontent with the unauthorised use of scenes from the Tamil novel ‘Nava Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari’, written by S Venkatesan, by other filmmakers.
During promotional events for ‘Indian 2’, Shankar praised the novel, which he discovered during the COVID-19 lockdown. He mentioned that it inspired him to adapt it into a screenplay for a planned three-part film franchise.
On September 22, Shankar took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the issue. In his post, he clarified that he holds the copyright for the novel and is disturbed by the unauthorised adaptations. He wrote, “As the copyright holder of Su. Venkatesan’s iconic Tamil novel Nava Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari, I’m disturbed to see key scenes being ripped off & used without permission in many movies. Really upset to see an important key scene from the novel in a recent movie trailer. Kindly refrain from using the scenes from the novel in movies, web series and any medium. Respect creators’ rights! Refrain from unauthorised adaptations of scenes, refrain from infringement or face legal action!”
