If one was to listen to various Hindi film songs from the 90s, they would realise there is a song for almost every topic. Be it love, heartbreak, food or even the weather there is a song ready to be heard.
Speaking of weather the song ‘aaj mausam bada beimaan hai’ by Mohammed Rafi from the film ‘Loafer’ (1973) seems appropriate because who knows when the weather will decide to change.

‘Sawan barse tarse dil’ from ‘Dahek’ (1999)Hearing the melodious vocals of Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam in this song could get anyone feeling happy and cheerful.
In the film the song begins with the character Sabina (Sonali Bendre) who at seeing the rain feels overjoyed. Where most people could feel put off by the rain and decide to stay at home, Sabina (Bendre) decides to go out and play in the rain and even go for a bike ride. On the other side is Sameer (Akshaye Khanna) who is on a mission to find the perfect gift for the girl he likes in the pouring rain. There’s one scene in the song where there is a crowd of umbrellas and Sameer (Khanna) well, he is the only one without an umbrella but he doesn’t seem to mind and happily runs through the crowd.
Shyam Raj wrote the lyrics which suited the situation in the song perfectly. The excitement and the yearning of both characters who can’t wait to meet one another. Even the pouring rain can’t deter them from meeting. Aadesh Shrivastava’s music was light and peppy matching the lyrics beautifully.
‘Tip tip tip tip baarish’ from ‘Afsana Pyar Ka’ (1991)A fun number that featured Aamir Khan and Neelam Kothari. The music was created by the late Bappi Lahiri and singing for Khan was Amit Kumar. Accompanying him was the great Asha Bhosle.
Visually to watch the song was very entertaining thanks to Khan’s dancing style. Fans of the 90’s Bollywood films will remember Khan dressed smartly in a black suit and a bowl hat dancing merrily in the pouring rain. Of course he has his umbrella which he uses more as a dancing accessory. When watching the song one is reminded of the old black and white Hollywood films because of the way it was picturised.
In the song Khan’s character Raj is trying to win over Nikita (Kothari) after he broke her heart. She watches him from her window but tries not to pay him much attention however that is impossible with Raj doing everything he can to make her change her mind. The song was one of a kind and till date no one has attempted to do a song like this again.
‘Rain is falling’ from ‘Gunehgar’ (1995)The lyrics by Surinder Saathi were very interesting none the less but one thing is for sure that Atul Agnihotri danced very passionately on the beat of Shyam-Surender’s music. Not forgetting Sudesh Bhosle who sang with such energy. As a whole the song just seemed to work very well.
In the video Rohit (Agnihotri) can be seen dancing with back up dancers while Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) watches on not very impressed by his actions. Bhatt and Agnihotri had worked together in many films during the 90s as they had great chemistry.
This song was that popular that it was actually used in the film ‘Taqdeerwala’ (1995) a few months later for a comedy scene featuring Shakti Kapoor, Asrani and the late Kader Khan.
‘Mausam ki tarah’ from ‘Jaanwar’ (1999)An extremely popular song that was constantly played on the radio. This song became an instant favourite of many because of its beautiful lyrics which were written by Sameer. In the film the character Sapna (Karisma Kapoor) asks Badshah (Akshay Kumar) whether he will change like the weather which is always unpredictable. Sapna (Kapoor) loves him so much that she’s afraid he will break her heart but Badshah (Kumar) promises her that his love for her will always remain.
The song stood out with the vocals of Alka Yagnik and Manhar Udhas, it was as though they had poured all their emotions into the lyrics. The song would have been incomplete without Anand-Milind’s vision as they created a masterpiece that continues to be loved more and more as time passes.
‘Bheegi hui hai raat magar’ from ‘Sangram’ (1993)Last but not least is this romantic, rain song that was picturised on Ajay Devgn and Ayesha Jhulka. Kumar Sanu and Kavita Krishnamurthy were the perfect artists chosen to sing this song as their vocals really suited Devgn and Jhulka.
