Vicky Kaushal to portray Guru Dutt in biopic?

Vicky Kaushal is rumoured to be in contention to portray Guru Dutt in an upcoming biopic on the legendary filmmaker.

Dutt, revered for his cinematic masterpieces such as ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) and ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959), may soon be the subject of a biographical film under Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, which holds the rights to his works.

Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director at Ultra, acknowledged the complexities of bringing Dutt’s extraordinary legacy to screen, stating, “Biopics are always challenging, as they must authentically capture an individual’s greatness and achievements. We would be keen to collaborate with producers and a modern-day director who deeply admires Guru Dutt and explore where the project leads.”

He further revealed that discussions have begun with two acclaimed directors to develop the film, emphasising the significance of Dutt’s journey, marked by both triumphs and personal struggles. “I have spoken to two highly respected directors who are interested in recreating his films as web series, as well as making a biopic on his life. Once we finalise the details, we will be able to share more. We are also in touch with his family.”

Taking on the role of Guru Dutt is no small challenge. Does Agrawal have an actor in mind who can truly capture the filmmaker’s artistic genius and melancholic depth? “It would be difficult to name just one, as there is a wealth of talent in the industry. However, I believe Vicky Kaushal could convey the emotional complexity of Guru Duttji’s persona,” he shared.

Earlier this month, Ultra Media & Entertainment Group commemorated Dutt’s birth centenary by unveiling restored versions of his iconic films—’Pyaasa’, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’ (1960), and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962)—at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.
