Paresh Rawal @ 70: Five memorable comedy roles by the actor
This actor has played many roles in his career from the caring father in ‘Tamanna’ (1997), to the evil uncle in ‘Dilwale’ (1994) and the supportive brother in ‘Raja’ (1995). Paresh Rawal is the actor that has proved no role is difficult for him as he can do it all.
This year on the 30th May Paresh Rawal will be celebrating his 70th birthday. On this occasion BizAsiaLive.com will list five memorable roles done by the actor in the comedy genre.
Hasmukhlal from ‘Judaai’ (1997)
Rawal’s character Hasmukhlal reminded one of a toddler who was in a question asking phase. Every time a person met him they would feel like pulling their hair out because he would constantly ask questions. In one scene he asks a person what Television they have, whether it’s a colour one, how many channels it has and so on. Hasmukhlal was a funny character who made the audience laugh but at the same time he spoke the bitter truth too.
Teja/ Ram Gopal Bajaj from ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ (1994)
This comedy film was in the news recently due to it being re released again after so many years. It was said that when the film first released in the year 1994 it failed to do well at the box office but over the years it has become a favourite of many because of its iconic characters and funny dialogues. Rawal was seen in a double role where he played the part of twin brothers. One was the wealthy Ram Gopal Bajaj who had a strict personality while his brother Shyam Gopal Bajaj also known as Teja was a criminal, who had big aspirations but struggled to make them a reality.
Gundya from ‘Chup Chup Ke’ (2006)
Gundya (Rawal) is a fisherman by profession but unfortunately he rarely gets the time to do any fishing as he is constantly trying to avoid one individual at all costs. The person he is avoiding is a businessman whom he owes a lot of money to. The day Gundya and his fellow fisherman Bandya (Rajpal Yadav) do go fishing they find an unconscious young man tangled in their fishing nets. They take him to the hospital and learn that he is not only deaf but he also cannot speak. What they don’t realise is that he can actually talk and he can hear everything they say but he decides to carry on this act. As they try to find out the identity of the young man they encounter many rib tickling moments.
This is another film that has become a classic known for its comedic scenes and hilarious situations.

Dr Dayal Ghungroo from ‘Welcome’ (2007)
This comedy drama had a huge star cast but still Rawal managed to make an impact with his role. He played the role of Akshay Kumar’s uncle who wants his nephew to settle down. His only condition is that the girl should belong to a respectable family and should have no ties with the criminal world. Unfortunately for him his nephew falls in love with a girl who has two brothers that are gangsters. After that there is no escaping the brothers and their criminal lifestyle.
The scene in which Dr Ghungroo first confronts one of the brothers on the phone was a memorable scene.
Baburao Ganpatrao Apte from ‘Hera Pheri’ (2000)
This is one film that many will associate with Rawal always. Baburao also known as Babu bhaiyya has and always will be iconic for his no nonsense attitude and the way he curses. His thick frame glasses and his white outfit which consisted of a kurta, vest and dhoti.
Who can forget those phone calls he received at his garage asking for Devi Prasad and his unforgettable comebacks. Also the scenes involving his two tenants Raju and Shyam who constantly bickered with one another like children and him in the middle. There are just too many memorable moments to name. There has been a lot of talk about another sequel in the works but whether that will ever happen is something the fans of this film will have to wait and see.
The team at BizAsiaLive.com wishes Paresh Rawal a happy 70th birthday!
